FTAA Declaration Leaves Women in Poverty PDF Print E-mail
November 21, 2003 - Last night negotiatiors hastily issued a watered down declaration, ending trade negotiations a day early at the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) meeting in Miami.  After the collapse of talks this September at the WTO meeting in Cancun, negotiators did not want to risk another failure, and came to a compromise with this draft declaration, which contains a great deal of rhetoric and few specifics on how to resolve outstanding issues.
 
Women Likely to Be Big Winners in G8 Debt Cancellation, But Current Deal Falls Short of Potential PDF Print E-mail
June 30, 2005 - Women, who form the vast majority of the 1.2 billion poorest people who live on less than $1 a day, could be the biggest winners if the Group of 8 Nations (G8) come through with their commitment to cancel $40 billion worth of debt owed by 18 of the world’s poorest nations at their upcoming summit next week, according to the Women’s Edge Coalition, a Washington DC-based nonprofit group that advocates for improving economic opportunity for poor women worldwide.

November 18, 2003 -The Women’s Edge Coalition, a nonpartisan organization that advocates international economic policies and human rights that support poor women worldwide, today announced it has completed its groundbreaking case study to analyze the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and future impact of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) on Mexico’s poor farmers, with a particular emphasis on women. 
 
Women's Edge Coalition Commends President's Initiative Empowering Women in Africa PDF Print E-mail
June 30, 2005 - The Women’s Edge Coalition welcomes the President’s announcement of  $55 million to bolster women’s justice and empowerment in four African nations.  According to the White House, the funds will be used to strengthen the capacity of legal institutions in the selected countries to punish perpetrators of violence against women and to help better reintegrate victims of violence into society.  It will also support existing public education efforts to spread awareness about the link between the spread of AIDS and violence against women.

July 1, 2004 - The top Washington diplomat for Jamaica commended the Women’s Edge Coalition for releasing a study illustrating how free trade agreements impacted Jamaican women and pledged to share the findings with high-level government officials.
 
U.S. Must Focus on Millennium Development Goals to Support World's Poor Women PDF Print E-mail
September 8, 2005 - Women will be the biggest losers if the UN World Summit in New York does not focus on its original purpose: reducing poverty worldwide and attaining the Millennium Development Goals.  The vast majority of the one billion people living on less than one dollar a day are women. Attempting to water down commitments the US has already made to reducing poverty and to change the agenda of the summit to include issues like terrorism and UN reform is a disservice to the world’s most vulnerable citizens.
