Photo Credit: Barbara Lee Shaw | Our spending reflects our priorities. Any day now, House and Senate leaders will determine what portion of our federal budget will be put towards international development. The decisions they make will impact how many girls we are able to help send to school, how many women will receive credit to start small businesses, and how many local women's organizations will be able to keep protecting victims of violence. In April, Women Thrive supporters called on Congress to restore international development funding that had been cut from President Obama's proposed budget. Your calls paid off - these lifesaving funds were restored to the proposed budget! | Now Congress is in the process of determining America's entire final budget for 2010 and it's critical that we spend our money wisely. Investing in women is the smartest investment we can make. Because women in developing countries are more likely than men to spend income on food, education, and healthcare for their children, every dollar we spend on a woman pays off exponentially in reducing poverty throughout her community. When development programs take women into account, they can literally lift entire communities out of poverty. But these programs need funding in order to work. That's why we need you to call your Senators and ask them to fully fund the President's International Affairs Budget Request of $53.9 billion (from which development programs are funded) - a mere 1.4% of our total budget. Please call your Senators today and ask them to support no less than $53.9 billion for the FY10 International Affairs Budget! How to Take Action: 1. Click here to look up your Senators' office phone numbers. 2. When an office staffer answers the phone, say, "As a constituent of Senator ______, I am calling to urge the Senator to contact the Appropriations leadership and express his/her support for no less than $53.9 billion for the FY10 International Affairs Budget 302(b) allocations. Now more than ever, America must remain engaged in the world and fully fund the "smart power" tools of diplomacy and development necessary to reduce world poverty, promote peace, and reinforce our values. Please support no less than $53.9 billion for the FY10 International Affairs Budget 302(b) allocations."
