New Policy Permits Asylum for Battered Women PDF Print E-mail

The Obama administration has introduced a new policy for abused women seeking asylum in the U.S. Previously, victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse did not always qualify for asylum. Now, if women can show domestic abuse is tolerated in their country and that they sought protection from their country’s institutions (in addition to meeting other conditions) they may qualify for asylum.

The U.S. can help reduce violence against women worldwide by passing the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), a bill that would make ending violence against women a diplomatic priority and invest in proven solutions for reducing abuse within developing countries.
