On July 17, 2009, Colombia's Inspector General reported that violence against women has increased by 10%, with at least 630,000 women in the Latin American country experiencing domestic violence.

According to the report, husbands make up the majority of abusers in reported cases (84%), followed by rape and assault by other family members. In 2008, 49 cases of sexual abuses were reported each day.

"The Colombian State still did not manage to guarantee and protect the rights of women to live wihtout violence and discrimination," the Inspector General said in his report.

The U.S. can help reduce violence against women worldwide by passing the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), a bill that would make ending violence against women a diplomatic priority and invest in proven solutions for reducing abuse within developing countries.
