MCC Releases Gender Policy Review PDF Print E-mail

On July 28, 2009 the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. international assistance agency that works with developing countries to promote good governance and long-term economic development released an issue brief on the completion of a review of its Gender Policy. The MCC’s Gender Policy, which was adopted in 2006, requires that countries receiving MCC funding undergo rigorous planning and evaluation to ensure that programs benefit both women and men. The MCC conducted an assessment of ongoing program activities in order to examine the implementation and impact of the Gender Policy.  Women Thrive has been the lead organization working with the MCC since its inception in 2004 to integrate gender across its planning, programming and monitoring and evaluation.

The review focused on MCC compact programs in five countries: Armenia, El Salvador, Honduras, Mali, and Nicaragua. It found that significant progress had been made in integrating gender analysis into its programs and also identified areas for improvement, namely the level of female participation in project design, the timing and depth of local consultations with women and men prior to project implementation, and the resources, technical expertise and capacity available to address social and gender issues. Women Thrive Worldwide commends the MCC for evaluating the impact of its Gender Policy and completing the review, a critical step to ensuring that the policy continues to achieve its goal of reaching women and men living in poverty and urges the agency to implement the suggestions outlined in the review.
